Last year, we celebrated some of the Heroes of Houston who helped each other during Hurricane Harvey, but we knew they weren’t the only ones. So, for the past few weeks up to April 16, 2018, we have invited the public to nominate people who went above and beyond to help their community during the disaster. The chosen heroes were part of a Wall of Heroes experience displayed at Discovery Green, Houston.

[Text on screen:? When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston it displaced more than 30,000 people]
[Background music plays]
[ Close up on Julia & Enrique ]
?[Julia’s voice]
People lost everything.
[Text on screen:?
[Julia’s voice]
I'm asking "How bad is the water inside your house?"
They say, "Everything is gone. We don't have shoes. We don’t have nothing."
The water reached high in some case. Some lives gone.
My grandson is seven years old and he told me, "Grandma, it's not right, there kids and ?the water coming up to their neck."
[Enrique’s voice]
I'm thinking about my son, my daughter. If they were in that situation, I would hope that somebody helped them, you know?
We do this for the community. We know their centres need a lot of help. So we've got the time
and we want to do something with it. Something good.
[Woman’s voice]
I lost clothing, furniture, car. I'm here basically to get myself back to where I was before hurricane Harvey.
[Enrique’s voice]
What we do is, giving the information they need so they can go look for, I guess more help.
[Woman’s voice]
Julia and Enrique, they're husband and wife. Each time I come for help I look to see their friendly faces.
If we need help, they find that help for us.
[Julia’s voice]
They need everything. Food first. Cleaning Supplies. Their faces change. They happy.
[Enrique’s voice]
?They kind of smile and they give you things. They give you everything to keep going.
[Woman’s voice]
Everyone came together to help everyone else.
Doesn't matter who you were. They were here for you.
We continue to help. I love this. I love help.
[Enrique’s voice]
I mean this never stop here. So we'll just keep going, going and going.

Title:? Shell
Duration: 30 seconds
Description:?
In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, ordinary people stepped up to help the affected in extraordinary ways.
This short film relays the heroic acts attributed to Mark, one of those extraordinary people.
[Rumble of thunder]
Sound of a storm crackles in the background. The camera pans up on the flooded? Houston landscape.
[Background music plays]
[Close up of Mark]
[Mark’s voice]
When the hurricane hit I saw the BakerRipley was gonna start the shelter. An energy centre.
So I showed up at BakerRipley on Wednesday and helped out that day arranging the baby supplies.
My day job is I'm a law professor and I've been volunteering with BakerRipley for the last nine years.
[Woman’s voice]
Mark came in and the first shift when we met him he was like, "I don't know how I ended up here. My kids are grown, I don't know anything about babies, but let me see."
He sat to the task of learning everything.
[Mark’s voice]
The energy centre is huge. There are five halls. And each of those is like an airplane hangar. The amount of people there was staggering.
[Woman’s voice]
Being a volunteer inside the shelter was very emotional. Seeing the people there, seeing the babies, seeing the children, seeing the families not knowing what was going to happen next to them but knowing that we had to keep together to meet their needs.
[Mark’s voice]
If you tell people in Houston that diapers are needed they will answer their call.
I would take a picture with my phone because the stack of diapers grew overnight.
Everyday there is more of them and there's just boxes, and boxes, and boxes. It became known as "the baby island".
[Woman’s voice]
I think that if something like a natural disaster pulls us together and you see the very best of humanity...
When he saw that we were all out of baby lotion he left out the side door, went across the street to the discount store, bought up all of their baby lotions. Went to another store and bought up all of their baby lotions. Now we have baby lotion.
It was amazing to watch this older man make it his task.
[Mark’s voice]
In a song I like there is a line: "Everyone's moving in the same direction." And that's what was going on there.
All the volunteers we're all moving in the same direction. Everybody there had like a sense of purpose and they knew there was work to be done and they're there to do it.

[Rumble of thunder]
Sound of a storm crackles in the background.
[Background music plays]
The camera pans up on the barren Houston landscape and focuses on the silhouette of a man jogging.
[View of flooded area]
[Woman’s voice]
First the thunder came, it rattled the house.? And then the water came.
[Panning flooded homes in suburban Houston environment]
[Text on screen]
August 2017.? Hurrcicane Harvey hit Houston.
[Man’s voice]
When floods come in they turn everything into muck.? You can smell it.? You know that there’s raw sewage in it.
[Close up of Michael Barton looking into the camera with a confident expression on his face. A suburbian scene is blurred in the background. [Text on screen] Michael
Shell employee, Mormon Helping Hands volunteer.
[We switch to a close up of a couple, looking directly into the camera. The background is blurred]
?[Woman’s voice]
We sat here and the water came from all sides and met in the middle of our floor.
[Man’s voice]
I think I was in shock.? I just looked at it and I couldn’t brood.
[Pan on flooded homes]
[Close up on Michael]
?[Man’s voice]
Everything that’s touching your floor is contaminated with it.? You have to get the walls open as fast as possible, that nasty water breeds this black mould and it’ll ruin your entire home.? All of the furniture, everything’s got to come out, all of the clothing has to come out.
[Soft piano keys play in the background)
[Close up of Eddy & Sam on sofa]
?[Woman’s voice]
We were just sitting like what’re we going to do now.? You know I mean, we can’t do all this ourselves.
[Close up of Michael]
?[Man’s voice]
You just can’t sit and not go and help.? The church I go to have this group called the Mormon Helping Hands.? As soon as the hurricane hit and the floodwaters receded emails started going round saying ‘Whose in?’ You just texted back ‘I’m in’. And then the very next day they said we’ve got work assignments, let’s go.? And we were off.
[Close up of Eddy & Sam on sofa]
[Woman’s voice]
A friend of mine gave me the number to call for help.? Low and behold the next day they were here.
[Close up on volunteers]
[Close up on Eddy]
Michael’s group came, I mean it was bright and early, they were chipper and happy and you know and they raised our morale, it was like such a blessing, just like answers.
[Close up on Michael driving through devastated area]
[Man’s voice]
Eddie and Sam were the first home we stopped at. We had about 15-18 people at their house.
[Close up on Cleo - Mormon Helping Hands Volunteer]
[Man’s voice]
Michael has a lot of energy, he’s a very good spirited person.? So to just have him in the room is just a good atmosphere to have.
[Close up of Sister Palmer – Mormon Helping Hands Volunteer]
[Woman’s voice]
Whatever they needed done, he was always right there at the forefront.? It was awesome how he was also caring in those times because it’s a very hard situation.
[Close up of Michael]
[Panning of home belongings and family]
[Man’s voice]
A lot of the families we helped didn’t want to let go. You had to tell them what was necessary and they would switch from protecting the material possessions to going hey family’s safe, my kids are safe.
Eddy wanted to save as much as she could.? It was the collection of stuff from an entire lifetime. We convinced her gently that it wasn’t going to be salvageable, we needed to get everything out of the house.
[Close up of Eddy & Sam on sofa]
[Man’s voice]
It just disrupts your whole life.? We couldn’t did it without them.
[Close up of Sister McAdam – Mormon Helping Volunteers]
[Close up on Sister McAdams - Mormon Helping Hands Volunteer]
[Woman’s voice]
Michael is very caring.? He loves serving, whenever anyone needs he’s ready to help them.
[Rousing soft music & violins]
[Michael getting out of car, greeting Eddy & Sam]
[Man’s voice]
Once you’ve helped one person it’s not like you get in your car and you say ‘okay I’ve helped the only person affected’ the whole neighbourhood’s affected.? Then you start taking days off of work so you can go help other people.? Anything feels more selfish than not helping people get over their disaster.
[Close up of Eddy & Sam on sofa]
[Rousing soft music & violins]
[Woman’s voice]
I don’t know how to explain, it’s just heartwarming how people have come together.
[Man’s voice]
Yep, I’ll agree. It’s just people coming together.? Everybody helped and I’m so grateful.

[Tom’s voice]
Being in a hurricane is awe inspiring and when the water comes into your house it's the most important thing you could ever think of.
[Camera pans over flooded Houston suburbs]
[Text on screen:? August 2017. Hurricane Harvey hits Houston.]
Even though it's an act of Mother Nature you still say, "Why me?"
The house flooded, it came in the right front door and slowly just filled the entire house.
I go to the Food Bank every day because, despite the flood, it's the most rewarding thing I've ever done in my life.
I've been doing it for 15 years and during Harvey was the most amazing experience I've ever had.
[Woman’s voice]
Mr Tom lost everything he had in his home.
[Woman’s voice]
The fact that Tom's house flooded didn't stop him. He still came in to help us.
He was here every day, following the flood.
[Woman’s voice]
The role of the Houston Food Bank in times of disaster is to get immediate assistance out to the community.
We were able to help restore hope to people all across our community who had lost hope and who had lost faith as a result of that storm.
[Tom’s voice]
The volunteers stayed and the food kept coming and coming. It was amazing.
[Woman’s voice]
Tom is a wonderful example of the resilience of the human spirit.
Clearly he has some physical challenges that he's had to overcome in his life. It doesn't stop him.
[Woman’s voice]
Mr Tom has been with us for 14 years and he's only missed about two weeks out of those 14 years.
had lost faith as a result of that storm.
[Tom’s voice]
This is not work. This is something that I value.
I'm helping people that don't have a lot of help from the other direction and I consider it my duty to help the people who need it.
[Woman’s voice]
Tom is the embodiment of the volunteer spirit. He has a twinkle in his eye, a willingness to work, a willingness to be here, doing the things that most need to be done.
[Woman’s voice]
Do you want me to get a the volunteer to go ahead and get that out for you?
[Woman’s voice]
He goes above and beyond. He inspires me as a person. He teaches me things every single day.
[Tom’s voice]
Harvey brought out I think the best of all of us and it has really broadened my understanding and my kinship, I guess, in my fellow man.
It's the best thing I have ever done.

[Panning flooded bayous and spillways in suburban Houston environment]
?[Man’s voice]
A hurricane, this is a terrible thing. The flooding, it’s an assault upon the entire community.
?[Joy’s voice]
It’s seems like an insidious natural force coming upon you.? You see the flood waters coming, you see what they're going to do and then you have to leave.? And everything that is cherished by you is susceptible and can be gone.
[Text on screen]
Harvey was the wettest hurricane in US history.? When it hit Houston it devastated 30,000 homes.
In the face of disaster, ordinary people did extraordinary things to help each other.
[Joy’s voice]
I was not special, I did not do anything that anybody else wasn't doing.
All I did was bring people together that were all trying to do good.
When the hurricane hit, my family was fine. But I knew others weren't. And I had to do something. I'm just a volunteer for the Y.
I reached out, and within a day we were open as a donation site. And every piece of the £70,000 that we collected was then distributed to sites that had a need.
The whole city is comprised of these bayous and spillways. They overflowed and there was no way to get from one part of the town to the other.
I could not get to the Y, but I could get here to the Mendenhall Center.
[Man’s voice]
When people arrive at a shelter, they're uncertain about their future and they may have lost everything.
[Joy’s voice]
With 112 cots for our guests, kitchen, children's playroom.
[Man’s voice]
My first impression of Joy was that she was in control of things.
And she had a way about her of directing people to do jobs that maybe you wouldn't ordinarily like to do, like maybe put out the trash, or sort through old clothes.
[Joy’s voice]
I had Becky at the Y, coordinating all the supplies that we would need at the Mendenhall Center. So, I didn't get to come down this road until the Friday, so it had been one week since I had been at the Y.
It's crazy. I had not seen Becky since the hurricane hit. And we're here.
[Becky’s voice]
Joy gave me the opportunity to step in and manage, and I would not have done it if I didn't know that my community was behind the Y.
I think over there, and there, they were getting water in.
When you arrive as a guest at one of these shelters, you truly need everything.
[Man’s voice]
The most important thing that they need is empathy and human contact.
[Woman’s voice]
When we arrived at the shelter the volunteers were like angels.
They were there taking care of our every need, from clothing, to food, to just plain comfort.
It didn't matter who you were, it didn't matter where you came from, everybody was equal and everybody wanted to help.
?[Man’s voice]
I don't know if she was officially in charge, but she was one of the people that everyone looked to, because you didn't exactly know what was going to unfold.
