Donors from Prince
Albert and district have more than supported the soccer field
house project, smashing its goal of $3.6 million, to raise
$5,165,230. At the last day of campaign local Canadian Tire owner Malcolm Jenkins and his wife Melba announced the $1 million donation toward the building of new facility. In recognition of $1 million donation, Mayor Jim Scarrow announced the official name of the civic facility will be the Alfred Jenkins Field House in memory of Malcolm's father. An auction was also held for items donated by local businesses. Project chairman Mitch Holash thanked Jenkins and all other donors for their donations and dedication to Prince Albert and the field house. "Malcolm and Melba have perhaps, more than any other couple I can think of over recent years, rolled up their sleeves and sculpted the visions and swung the hammers that have permitted Prince Albert, in some economically pressed times, to continue the rich build-it-ourselves tradition that is the heritage of this community," he said. The project committee is expecting a high number of kids playing soccer at new facility that will have more room to play. There are about 1,300 kids who play outdoor soccer in Prince Albert and a peak of 800 who play indoor. Now all the kids will be able to play indoor soccer year round. "Kids of Prince Albert thank your parents for giving you such a great city to live in. This is absolutely outstanding," said Ajay Krishan, fundraising chairman. "My earliest memory is of my dad and uncle George taking me to my first soccer game, our home team Brentford, England" said Malcolm Jenkins. Malcolm announced that once facility is built, a tournament called "Brentford Cup" will be held annually. The City of Prince Albert has put $4 million into the project and the province has put in $3.5 million to this community initiative. mabbas@paherald.sk.ca |
